The holidaymakers’ beach chairs are locked.
I sit down in front of one in the shade.
Today the water is full of jellyfish.
Son 1 digs in the sand,
till it becomes quite coarse.
Till it becomes quite wet.
And deep.
Then wide.
He says, ‘I’m working.’
Son 2 digs right next to it.
I shout, “Watch out,”
and take a picture.
Their heads look out.
Son 2 carries
a handful of sand from the sea,
he spreads it crumb by crumb
where the holes were.

It was built by Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1939 as part of the Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude or KdF) project. Although the buildings were planned as a holiday resort, construction was not completed, and they were not used for this purpose. Auf dem Boden
Scherben von Jahrzehnten,
Glas und Porzellan in
braun,
grün,
weiß.
Am Strand:
die Strandkörbe der Feriengäste abgeschlossen.
Ich setze mich vor einen in den Schatten.
Heute ist das Wasser voller Quallen.
Da.
Sohn 1 gräbt in den Sand,
bis dieser grob wird.
Bis er nass wird.
Tief.
Dann in die Breite.
Sagt, “Ich arbeite.”
Sohn 2 gräbt gleich daneben.
Ich ruf, “Passt auf”,
und mach ein Bild.
Ihre Köpfe schauen raus.
Sohn 2 bringt
eine Hand voll Sand vom Meer,
verteilt ihn krümelweise an dem Ort,
an dem die Löcher waren.
Heute ist das Wasser voller Quallen.
*Prora ist ein Ortsteil der Gemeinde Binz auf Rügen. Er liegt direkt an der Ostseeküste im Zentrum der Prorer Wiek und ging aus dem zwischen 1936 und 1939 gebauten, jedoch unvollendet gebliebenen KdF-Seebad Rügen hervor. Im Komplex sollten durch die Organisation Kraft durch Freude (KdF) 20.000 Menschen gleichzeitig Urlaub machen können. Der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges 1939 verhinderte die Fertigstellung als Seebad. Stattdessen wurde Prora nach dem Krieg zu einer Kaserne der Nationalen Volksarmee (NVA), untrennbar verknüpft mit der Entwicklung der DDR – von der verdeckten Aufrüstung seit 1949 bis zur Friedlichen Revolution im Jahr 1989.
