Collaboration: Papa used to use joint sealer

Just a quick info 🙂 New haibun published!! Surprise, it is a collaboration ❤

My friend Anna (@annaxmania on Instagram) is the most talented prose/prose poetry writer I know. I read this piece and told her—this could be a haibun. It brought me to tears. Am I allowed to edit it slightly and add haiku? She said yes, and that’s it, the story behind this.

Except that we are not just friends. Except that we have never before met in person. Except that I am so grateful to have her in my life. Except that she introduced me to magnetic poetry and blackout poetry. Except that we hug and laugh and cry in our chats. Except that she is the one that I’m totally comfortable with collaborating. Except so much more.

Here is an excerpt, but please read the full haibun in the current issue 24 by Drifting Sands Haibun

It’s been hard.

Jani, the day after Papa’s burial, I woke up alone. Ian was already working. Leon was already taking his first nap of the day. And I found myself telling my brain to stop the tears, it was time to wake up and live. How. I dragged myself out of bed to brush my teeth, wash my face, and put on somedecent looking clothes. I don’t know what came over me. I saw my hands reach for eyeliner and lipstick. I don’t know what snapped in my brain so that I ran to Ian.

“We’re getting a washing machine!” I guess he read my mind. That getting a washing machine was my own way of grieving, my own way of mourning. He quickly got ready and we went to buy it.
