It’s been a while, and yes, I’ve totally forgotten to share these news on my blog (though I’ve included it diligently on my page of published poetry). One of my monoku has received an honourable mention in this year’s Marlene Mountain Memorial Award, and it moves me deeply—that especially this one has been chosen. Because. It’s so close to my heart.

“This masterful senryu puts a spin on the Peanuts character Charlie Brown, who is kind, hopeful, and often let down despite trying his best. Used as a verb, it suggests being defeated, overlooked, or made to feel small. The system here refers to institutions such as schools, workplaces, or society itself which treat the son unfairly or wear down his spirit. A very commonplace experience, sadly.
But, is it only the children who are subjected to this? At one point or the other, “the system” has failed all of us without privilege. Since we don’t know how old the son is, this senryu becomes all-inclusive, and portrays a quiet concern and helplessness. It questions whether the system, which was made by us and for us, supports us or slowly crushes our confidence, hope and aspirations.”
